The New Deal restored a sense of security as it put people back to work. It created the framework for a regulatory state that could protect the interests of all Americans, rich and poor, and thereby help the business system work in more productive ways. We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence.

“Necessitous men are not free men.” People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.

Eisenhower supported a policy of “modern Republicanism” that occupied a middle ground between liberal Democrats and the conservative wing of the Republican Party. Eisenhower continued Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, expanded Social Security, and prioritized a balanced budget over tax cuts. He played a major role in establishing the Interstate Highway System, a massive infrastructure project consisting of tens of thousands of miles of divided highways.
